Hello everyone, today I will talk about our last task in the Current Issues in Teaching course, which was to create a corpus-based teaching material.
We worked on this task as a group of four. ( If you wonder about my friends Almina, Beyza, and Nilüfer's blogs, you can click on their names.)
We designed a worksheet and a lesson plan focusing on the usage of the words "win" and "earn" through corpus-based learning.
We used “Corpus Mate”, a tool that provides real-life examples from a corpus to help students identify patterns in language use. In our lesson, by completing the tasks, our students were guided to discover the nuanced differences between "win" ( such as"winning a prize") and "earn" (such as "earning money"), encouraging critical thinking and hands-on learning.
We developed our lesson plan using the ASSURE model, ensuring a structured approach. We considered the specific needs of our learners, clearly outlined objectives, incorporated media, and provided opportunities for engagement. The lesson included activities such as analyzing authentic sentences, completing gap-filling exercises, etc.
Most of the parts except for using corpus were really enjoyable for me in this task. It was easy for me and for my group members to prepare the lesson plan. Also we didn't have any trouble while deciding the tasks in our worksheet, and thanks to canva we were able to design a good-looking worksheet easily. Also I have to tell you that we are close friends with my group, so this fact also helped us while doing this task because we could tell each other every opinion without any second thoughts. But also we had some challenges too. For example, although Corpus Mate was an excellent tool for providing authentic data, narrowing down relevant examples took time. The process also required us to consider how to present the data in a way that was accessible and engaging for students. All in all, it was a great task for pre-service teachers to comprehend the importance of integrating technology in lessons and highlighted the potential of corpus-based learning in fostering language awareness.
I told you a lot about our worksheet and lesson plan so, if you wanna see them you can click on them. Take care ,till my new task :)
